There is good, there must be evil, that’s the life cycle in this world. Talking about it, one of them is Cornelis de Houtman. Dutch sailors who successfully set foot in the country via Banten on June 27, 1596.

Armed with information from sailors in the late 16th century, he departed from the port of Amsterdam with four accompanying merchant ships. The arrival of Cornelis de Houtman in the archipelago, became the forerunner of the Dutch colonizers to take hold in Indonesia. Intrigued by the story? Here we explain below.

Tempted because of the stories told by people

Did you know that this man who was born in Gouda, April 2, 1565, was interested in exploring to the East side of the world after receiving information from European traders about the existence of a hidden “Heaven” Island. The area is believed to have natural wealth in the form of spices.

Cornelis de Houtman immediately prepared for the voyage after he was appointed by the Dutch merchant authorities. In The Cradle of Colonialism (1963), George Masselman mentions that the Cornelis de Houtman fleet departed from Amsterdam for Lisbon, Portugal. The goal is to find as much information as possible about the existence of this mysterious island.


Formed a Dutch trade union

Precisely in 1594, Cornelis de Houtman united with all Dutch traders and formed Compagnie van verre te Amsterdam (Long distance company) headquartered in Amsterdam. These new trade unions were formed to find islands that produced spices. Until April 2, 1595, Cornelis de Houtman was appointed to immediately anchor and set sail on April 2, 1595.


Came to Indonesia, and claimed hundreds of victims

The man was accompanied by four ships, Amsterdam, Hollandia, Mauritius, and Duyfken, Conelis de Houtman began his exploration of the East side of the world. Unfortunately, due to the thin stock of food, many crew members died of sprue. Not infrequently, the internal conflict between the captain of the ship and the crew is also a problem in itself. The influence of the tropical climate which was different from the weather in the Netherlands, also made many of the crew of the four ships dropping one by one.

on June 27, 1596, Cornelis de Houtman’s fleet arrived on the island of Banten. Reporting from tirto.id, in total, there were about 249 survivors arriving at their destination. These foreign merchants were initially received well by the local authorities. But unfortunately, because of their bad temper, such as going in and out of the city at will, many of them were arrested by the security officers of the Banten Sultanate.


Success in finding Indonesia!

Because of this man, the consequences that Indonesia received were very fatal. Dutch foreign traders, including Frederick de Houtman who was Cornelis’s brother, were thrown into prison. As a result, he also had to pay a fine in the form of money to free his brother.

Their behavior also had to be paid handsomely at that time. Reporting from tirto.idCornelis, along with other Dutch trading groups, had to be driven out of the land and driven out of Banten. Although he could not find the spices he was looking for, Cornelis de Houtman managed to find a shipping route to Indonesia. It was he who later paved the way for other Dutch sailors to come back to the land of the archipelago.

Not as a trader, but turned into a colonizer who later established colonialism in Indonesia for hundreds of years. No wonder the Dutch colonized Indonesia at a later date. Apart from being interested in the potential of spices, this European colonialist wanted to expand his trading business more widely.
